What It Is
When a member of the couple faces an illness, especially if chronic, their relationship with their body changes. In these cases, in fact, the body is often experienced primarily and understandably as a source of concern.
Gender roles within the couple can also change during a partner’s illness, who will need care and may become an object of concern and protection.
This change in roles, while natural and almost inevitable, can lead to difficulties for both members of the couple. The ill person may feel diminished and discouraged, and the partner may perceive their companion as too weak and in turn resent the weight of the situation.
In moments like these, sexuality within the couple can consequently undergo major changes and may be set aside as something unnecessary during such a difficult time. Research, however, shows that the importance of the sexual sphere does not diminish at all during periods like these.
Sexuality, in fact, can represent an area that, if preserved, can help the person affected by the condition and their partner maintain a perception of well-being and can, therefore, represent a resource for the quality of life in general and for the well-being of the couple.
Very often, despite this, the sexual sphere is not taken into consideration by doctors and specialists involved in the treatment of serious or chronic physical conditions.
Gamos, therefore, intends to provide a specific psychological and sexological counseling and support service, with the aim of helping people rediscover the sexual sphere as a resource to better manage difficult and stressful situations.
