What It Is
Giftedness, or high cognitive potential, refers to a condition of neurodivergence where the person possesses intellectual abilities above average. Children with giftedness generally have a high IQ (equal to or greater than 130).
In these cases, we are witnessing an exceptional ability to learn and understand complex concepts, solve problems creatively, and think critically. Such abilities are often linked to a curiosity that sometimes appears insatiable.
Additionally, gifted children may also exhibit greater empathy and social awareness.
Depending on the child, as with other neurodivergences, we may observe differences, with a greater presence of some aspects over others.
Recognizing and nurturing giftedness is essential in any case. Paradoxically, these children may feel different and/or misunderstood and struggle to find what truly works for them. Giftedness requires adequate support to promote balanced development and a good quality of life.
