When Defense Increases
As the years pass, the theme of defense becomes more present. Defense against risk, the unexpected, unreliable people, situations that seem less controllable than they once were. This is not about becoming distrustful or suspicious. It is a natural change in how one perceives their own vulnerability. When the body changes, energy decreases, and the world appears more complex, it is normal to develop greater attention to one’s own safety.
In the third and fourth stages of life, the need for protection may grow. One becomes more cautious, more attentive, less inclined to expose oneself. This may concern:
- relationships
- travel
- daily choices
- new experiences
Defense, in these cases, is not closure. It is a strategy to preserve balance and continuity. The problem arises only when defense becomes rigid and generalized.
From Protecting Oneself to Withdrawing
When the perception of risk increases too much, it may happen that defense transforms into withdrawal. Situations, people, and experiences are avoided not because they are uninteresting, but because they seem “too much.” This transition is often silent. It is not experienced as a choice, but as a necessity. Over time, however, withdrawal can reduce opportunities for exchange, fuel loneliness, and confirm the idea that the world is dangerous.
Prevention Does Not Mean Living in Alert
Taking care of oneself does not mean living constantly on alert. Prevention is not anticipating everything that could go wrong, but recognizing one’s limits and respecting them. Healthy prevention:
- takes into account one’s resources
- accepts that not everything is controllable
- distinguishes between prudence and fear
When prevention becomes hypervigilance, however, it can increase anxiety and reduce freedom. With age, trust does not disappear. It changes form. One becomes more selective, more attentive, less willing to accept compromises that once seemed acceptable. This can be a sign of maturity, not closure. The work is not to “go back to how things were,” but to find a balance between protection and openness that is sustainable today.
Finding a Balance Between Protection and Openness
At Spazio FormaMentis, work with people in the third and fourth stages of life is not about “lowering defenses” or pushing them to expose themselves. It concerns the way defenses have been constructed and how they are functioning today. In this space, it becomes possible to:
- distinguishing between useful defense and defense that limits
- reducing anxiety related to the perception of danger
- regaining trust without naivety
- building more flexible boundaries
- remaining in the world without feeling constantly threatened
This is not about lowering one’s guard. It is about not always living behind a barrier.
